Fandom letter meme

1. Leave a comment to this post.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows

Ganked from [personal profile] cornerofmadness who gave me the letter C. "C", as it turns out, is kinda hard. It's not a common letter for names. But here's mine:

1. Connor Angel is the gimme, because that's why COM gave me the letter C. I liked the idea of Connor from the moment we found out Darla was pregnant with a human child. I tried to remain spoiler-free during season 3 of Angel, but I accidentally read a little blurb by David Greenwalt after "Sleep Tight" aired saying the baby was gone forever. I was devastated. For me, as a single, childless woman who always identified with the character Angel (from season 1 BtVS on), and had started to regret her decision not to have kids, seeing Angel, who was NEVER supposed to be able to have kids, fall in love with his son... it just hit me where I lived.

And teenaged Connor was so compelling. I got that he was annoying to people; I hated how annoying Mutant Enemy wrote him. I hated that they wrote him out of the show in "Home" so he and Angel could never mend their relationship. I cried like a big bitty baby at the end of "Origin." I was annoyed when I was inadvertently spoiled for Connor's return in "Not Fade Away." But it was still awesome anyway. Yet it left me unsatisfied because Connor had so much untapped potential as a character--an evident (and prophesied) potential for heroism, childhood issues up the ying-yang, and a father he needed to reconcile with. I worked that out for myself.

2. Jacob Clarke, Steven Spielberg's Taken. The half-human, half-alien "love child" of a neglected Forties housewife and the strange, wounded visitor from another planet she took into her home, thinking he was a war deserter. Jacob's half-brother and half-sister never liked his father much--or, didn't trust the strange man, who deserted their mother before the child was born--but they are devoted to Jacob. Jacob had odd mental powers and little physical strength, and barely lived long enough to father a daughter of his own (Lisa Clarke was a strong contender to be character #2 in this list, 'cause of the awesome). Jacob also spent most of his life in hiding from Bad Men in the Govment. I think their names had C's in them as well.

3. Sarah Connor, the Terminator movie series. Mama Bear has gun, will travel. She is the mentor of the savior of the future, her son John Connor (a strong contender to be character #3 on this list). The first movie in the series came out at a time when the big screen was full of action-hero testosterone-fests. "The Terminator" sounded just the same. But it wasn't. It turned on the point of view of a woman. Sarah Connor was at the core of that movie, and her transformation from unremarkable waitress to teeth-gritting hero who had to save herself in the end when her protector died... was awesome to watch. The second movie centered more around John Connor and the Terminator, but let's face it. Whacked-out Linda Hamilton stole the show. Sarah's transformation into the woman Kyle Reese was always taught about was less about destiny and more about someone rising to the occasion because life and love demanded it.

4. Cho Chang, the Harry Potter series. You never forget your first big crush. Harry first spotted Cho over a broomstick on the Quidditch pitch. She was a fellow seeker, which means you know they spent a lot of time dancing around each other ignoring the rest of the game because they had to. It was their job. And if she gave him a run for his money, why wouldn't he have had a big crush on her? I was pleased with the actress they cast in the films, although we didn't get to see too much of her. And it annoyed the hell out of me that Order of the Phoenix had been chopped up so much it appeared Cho betrayed the D.A. to Umbridge, which she didn't. Ah, but to this day, I am still a Cho/Harry 'shipper. Because I was sold on it by Rowling, less so Harry/Ginny, which felt forced.

5. Charity Carpenter, The Dresden Files. I was debating whether to pick Molly Carpenter, 'cause it was still a "C" name, and Molly is slowly becoming Awesome, ne, formidable, but her mother is really the Unsung Awesome of the Carpenter family. She's undoubtedly where Molly gets her magic from, but she never embraced it as a lifestyle. She protects her family while her husband is out swashbuckling with grit, intelligence, and sheer chutzpa. And she doesn't take any lip from Harry, either, which he respects now.

Runner ups for this meme: Justine Cooper, Jenny Calendar, Ana Lucia Cortez, Cassandra (Highlander), Charlie Keys (Taken).
